WP 1-2 Characterizing the potential of known ARS inhibitors as anti-malarial targets
WP Leader: Dr. Lluis Ribas de Pouplana
Other participants: UAVR, UoM
Type of activity: RTD
Start month: 1 (January 2009)
End month: 12 (December 2009)
Deliverables:
  • A. Testing activities of known ARS inhibitors: submitted
  • B. Analyzing the genomic response in Plasmodium to ARS inhibition: submitted
  • Description: Within this WP we will proceed to the characterization of the effect of known and predicted ARS inhibitors on the infection cycle of erythrocytes by Plasmodium falciparum. This data will be useful for further studies in the development of ARS antagonists as potential anti-malarial drugs.

WP 1-3 Characterization of tRNA recognition mechanisms
WP Leader: Dr. Lluis Ribas de Pouplana
    Other participants: UAVR, CSIR
    Type of activity: RTD
    Start month: 1 (January 2009)
    End month: 24 (December 2010)
    Deliverables:
  • A. Characterization of P. Falciparum ARS: Submitted
  • B. Engineering of P. falciparum ARS Submitted
  • Description: This WP will study the translation machineries of human pathogens and the development of novel methods of antibiotic selection. The study of tRNA recognition in model organisms has provided a detailed understanding of the general features of this process. We want to extend this knowledge to disease-causing species and apply it to the discovery of new therapeutics.
